CUMBERLAND – East Webster’s Timakis Bell made sure there was no late-game comeback for the Wildcats this past Friday night in the Wolverines 28-14 victory in the second round of the Class 2A North State playoffs.
Calhoun City battled their way out of a 20-0 hole on a 12-yard touchdown pass from JR Jennings to Tray Pratt and a 5-yard scoring run by Jennings to make it a 20-14 contest with 4:42 left in the fourth quarter.
Bell helped the Wolverines eat up the clock by grounding out 52 yards on the ensuing drive and put the game on ice with a 33-yard touchdown run to give East Webster the 28-14 victory to advance to the third round of the playoffs.
East Webster scored on their first drive of the game on a 7-yard run from Demetrius O’Briant before getting scoring runs of four and three yards quarterback from Ledrick Patterson.
Calhoun City had four turnovers on the night and missed two scoring opportunity inside the East Webster 10-yard line.
For East Webster, Patterson completed 3-of-3 passing for 27 yards and rushed for 136 yards and two touchdowns while Bell finished with 176 yards rushing and a touchdown.
Jennings finished with 205 yards passing with a touchdown and an interception while rushing for 39 yards and another score for the Wildcats.
Round three for Wolves
Up next for East Webster will be a home game against the Ackerman Indians.
Ackerman pitched their sixth shutout in the past seven games behind a 27-0 win over the Hollandale-Simmons Blue Devils this past Friday night.
It will be the second trip to Cumberland for the Indians this season, the last time Ackerman visited East Webster they came away with a 31-0 victory over the Wolverines.
The winner of the game will take on the winner between West Bolivar (13-0, 4-0 – #1 seed from Region 4-2A) and Baldwyn (7-5, 5-0 – #1 seed from Region 1-2A) in the Class 2A North State Championship game next Friday.
