Zepporah Gladney
AMORY - Zepporah Gertrude Jones Gladney, born on May 12, 1921, was a true blessing given to the late Turner Jones Sr. and the late Sarah Thomas Jones in Houston, a daughter full of faith. She confessed her faith in Jesus the Christ at an early age in the A.M.E. Church of Houston and later transferred her membership to the Second Baptist Church of Houston. She attended and graduated from the Chickasaw County High School in Houston and was Salutatorian of her class. After graduation she attended the Ministerial Institute College in West Point.
On Sept. 2, 1945, she was joined in Holy Matrimony to the late Rev. A.L. Gladney. To this union was the birth of three children: Henry Edward Gladney, Elizabeth Ann Gladney and Willie Ira Gladney (deceased). Zepporah shared her life doing the work of the Lord along with her husband for 43 years until he departed from this life on May 15, 1989.
In her days after retirement from the Amory Garment Manufacturing of Amory at the age of 79, her passions of teaching, singing and playing the piano did not retire. As a member of the Second Baptist Missionary Baptist Church of Prairie, she served faithfully even as her health was failing as a Sunday school teacher, President of the Missionary Ministry and pianist for the children and adult choir. In addition to her love for the service of the Lord she enjoyed using the talents that God gave to her for sewing and gardening. When she was younger, if she could not find what she wanted to buy, she made it for she was always known as a “well dressed lady.” And she would say that “a well dressed lady will always wear a hat.” She was blessed with a “green thumb” because whatever she planted whether vegetables, flowers or plants, they would always grow into beautiful gardens.
She took flight from this life on Oct. 10, 2009, at the age of 88 and leaves to forever cherish her memories: Son, Rev. Henry E. Gladney (Yvonne) of Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Minister Elizabeth Denard (Charles) of Detroit, Mich.; brother, Daniel Jones (Margaret) of Solo, Ohio, and stepdaughter, Willie Etta Holmes of Houston sister-in-law, Christine Ware of Troy; 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, Eric F.
