OKOLONA – The Chickasaw County Board of Supervisors heard from disgruntled residents of CR 179 about the condition of their road. Harley Bailey addressed the board about the road washing out during rainy weather.

“We are not satisfied,” Bailey said. “Something needs to be done and something has to be done.”

Members of the group that live on the road have previously addressed the board requesting that the road be paved. They pointed out other paving jobs that have taken place in the county in recent years, including Old Hwy. 8.

Supervisor Tommy Criddle said that Old Hwy. 8 was in his district and was paved before he took office.

“They sold bonds to pay for it and the county is still paying that off,” Criddle said. “That was a half a million dollars.”

“That’s why we can’t pave any this year,” said Supervisor Jerry A. Hall. “We’re still paying off that debt.”

Hall explained that each supervisor has a four-year plan that maps out which roads they will improve is funding is available.

Anderson McFarland is the supervisor in District 1 where CR 179 is located. McFarland said that he had researched the road plans in District 1 for the past eight years prior to his term and that CR 179 was not on the plan, but it could be added to his plan. The completion of road plans is dependent on funding available for repair.

“We want some action done with 179, that’s all we’re asking,” Bailey said.

A public hearing was held for the proposed Chalk Bluff Volunteer Fire Dept. The hearing is a required part of the process to form the department. No opposition was voiced to forming a VFD and McFarland moved to approve the district with Hall seconding. Motion passed unanimously.

The board adopted a proclamation declaring Oct. 16 Bukka White day. The Chickasaw County Historical and Genealogical Society will unveil a marker in honor of White at 10 a.m. at Joe Brigance Park that will join the MS Blues Trail.
