HOUSTON - All three of the local public schools in Chickasaw County incorporate athletics as extra curricular opportunities. While coverage of high school sports is available each week in the Chickasaw Journal, the younger players may sometimes feel left out.
"That's where parents and fans come into the picture," said Chickasaw Journal GM, Lisa Voyles. "When you try to work out middle school and JV coverage for sports, things really get out of hand. You're looking at three or so teams per school in each sport. Someone is playing every night of the week. As a small, weekly paper, we simply don't have the staff handle it."
Voyles is encouraging parents and fans to make sure their favorite players receive the coverage they deserve.
"Just about everyone has a digital camera these days," Voyles said. "Shoot a couple of photos, attach a game date and score and send them in. We'll be glad to run them in the paper. We know that when kids play organized sports at a young age they are in a learning environment. They learn team work, dependability, a strong work ethic, fair play and cause and effect situations. We'd love the opportunity to recognize our local student athletes for their achievements."
